“Learn to Fly the friendly skies”
Updated: 18/01/2025
Gravity Nelson has been steadily building its repertoire of adult and kids jump classes and we are to offer private and group coaching clinics on jump progressions. Gravity Nelson’s philosophy has always been to help progress the sport of mountain biking in Nelson. We believe that the recent improvements on Firball, P51 and Turners, plus the construction of Koata Rere, and the current popularity of the Branford, Tahunanui, and McGazza Land jumps, signals the perfect storm for Nelson riders to improve their jumping game. Gravity’s investment in its airbags and the new Field of Nightmares jumps provide the opportunity for further progression of people’s jump skills.
Gravity Nelson’s Jump Classes were initially launched by Alex from Whistler, and now the rest of the Gravity Team has refined and improved these courses to the next level. Check out Alex’s initial vision for our jump clinics below.
Five Signs you need a “Fundamentals” Jump Clinic
Do any of these sound like you?
“My wheels are currently stuck to the ground, I’m too scared to jump at all”
“I can get my wheels off the ground, but I case everything on Firball or P51”
“I can jump well enough to clear some jumps but still case many and frequently feel uncomfortable or scared in the air”
“My friends leave me behind on any section of trail with jumps on it as I case my way down the track, especially on Koata Rere”
“My friends say helpful things like “Just send it” or “hit it with speed”, but my brain tells me I’m going to die! I just want to learn how to jump properly”
If any of these sound like you then you need to IMMEDIATELY book a “Jumping Fundamentals” course to learn the basics of getting the wheels off the ground and how to safely increase jumping height and distance.
Five Signs you need a “Flight Control” Jump Clinic
Do any of these sound like you?
“I can jump, but frequently scare myself with nose-heavy or rear tire heavy landings”
“I can jump friendly shaped tables but am nervous to try doubles or jumps with steeper faces””
“I can jump mountain bike jumps but am keen to try dirt jumps but the take-offs look intimidating”
“I can jump and would like to start throwing tricks but I’m not sure where to start”
“I can jump but need to build my confidence on a variety of styles of jumps”
If any of these sound like you then you need to IMMEDIATELY book a “Flight Control” course with Alex to learn how to improve your jumping techniques and tools for added confidence, style and safety in the air and progressing your jumping to the next level.
Signs you need a “Tricks” Jump Clinic
Ok, so now you have the fundamentals sorted, and you have some control while in “Flight” during your jumps, so it is time to start throwing some phat tricks. You know you are ready, now you just need the guidance and the safe location to learn them. This is where Gravity Nelson’s Airbags and mulch jumps at the Field of Dreams come into play, providing a much safer environment to advance your tricks. Private sessions can be booked or you can join public sessions, email us for more information if you are ready to start tricking like these kids (no matter what your age)!

What to Expect from a “Gravity Jump Clinic”.
Gravity Nelson’s Jump clinics are 2.5-3 hours long and focus on a safe, fun, progressive building of your skills under the watchful eye of our expert coaches. Most courses will start with a revision of basic body position as problems here can undermine your ability to jump at all. Once we have revised and corrected body position we move on to fundamental concepts, movements and timing of jumping techniques, incorporating detailed explanations, demonstrations, practice, feedback, and revision. We incorporate the use of slow-motion video capture to help riders become more self-aware of their body position, movements and timing throughout jumps. Through repetition, fine-tuning, and well-structured instruction we aim to have you significantly improve your jumping skills by the end of the session and leaving with a much more thorough understanding of how to practice to further improve your jumping.
Obviously no one is going to learn how to jump perfectly in just one lesson, but we hope to give you the tools to continue improving your techniques and ability through purposeful practice and repetition. We also encourage you to book follow-up lessons as you progress so that we can help you further improve your jumping and advance to new and higher levels of skills, confidence and progression. With practice, persistence and our coaching we hope to see you sending jumps like never before, like the Gravity Super Groms:
